Do you encounter new species in your role but have struggled with the international rules and regulations for naming them? Join us for a workshop on how to name new species of fungi, bacteria, or virus, led by some of the world’s top taxonomists, including Dr. Cathie Aime and Dr Fiona Constable.
In this interactive session, you’ll learn:
· The essential rules and guidelines for naming new species under international codes of nomenclature.
· How to ensure your species name is valid, useful, and compliant with the code.
· Case studies from recent discoveries of fungi, bacteria, and viruses.
· Practical considerations for publishing new species names in scientific literature.
Whether you’re a researcher, student, or diagnostician, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge and tools to contribute to species discovery.

Renowned for its stringency, but successful in warding off some of the world’s most threatening pathogens, Australia’s biosecurity system is complicated and multi-faceted.
Many parties make up the biosecurity continuum, but the federal Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries forms the first line of defence.
Despite its crucial role, much of DAFF’s work remains behind the scenes. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the inner workings of the federal biosecurity system. Through a series of presentations, a discussion panel, and an on-site tour, you’ll gain valuable insights into the policies, science, and surveillance strategies that form the backbone of Australia's biosecurity efforts.
Join us to learn about the challenges and successes of Australia’s biosecurity, share your thoughts, and connect with fellow scientists at APPS 2025. We look forward to welcoming you!
